When I was a kid, I fell through the ice.
One second I was running across a frozen pond, the next I was underwater—swallowed by silence, shocked by the cold, and unsure if I’d make it back up. It wasn’t the kind of moment you forget. It was the kind that splits your life into two halves: before and after.
I survived, obviously. But something shifted. That day sparked a quiet obsession with danger—the kind you don’t see coming.
LESSONS IN SAFETY FIRST
Everyone has an origin story. I think the experience of falling through the ice makes mine more dramatic than most. It’s what led me to become a lifeguard.
At first, I was just a kid trying to keep people safe from the obvious hazards—deep ends, reckless cannonballs and accidental mishaps.
But over time, it wasn’t drowning I worried about most. It was the sun.
There was danger in plain daylight. The slow, silent damage from the sun was something no one saw coming until it was too late. I watched skin freckle and burn, saw early warning signs, and couldn’t unsee what was happening all around me.
So, I went to medical school.
A CAREER MOVE IN CARING
Dermatology called to me not just because of the science, but because of the stakes. Over the next 25 years, I stood on the front lines of skin health—diagnosing melanomas, treating sun-damaged skin, and helping people protect their largest, most exposed organ.
But I also saw the limits. Sunscreen alone wasn’t enough. Behavior didn’t change easily. What people needed wasn’t more warning. They needed visibility. They needed to see what their skin was going through—in real time.
That’s why I created BURŪV.
